Homemade Chocolate Chips

These homemade chocolate chips are made with natural ingredients you can feel good about eating and they are so easy to make. With just a little time you can enjoy delicious homemade chocolate chips at a fraction of the price of store bought chips.

Growing up, I loved eating sweets. My favorites were anything that included chocolate. My kids are the same way and to be honest, I still am too. So needless to say not much has changed.

Although these days, I have learned to limit my sweets and really pay attention to what they are made of. It’s important to me to eat as healthy as I can and teach my kids to do the same.

One way that I do that is by reading labels. One thing that I have noticed when reading labels is that many chocolate chips contain ingredients I would rather avoid including soy lecithin. Soy lecithin is an additive used to help keep the ingredients combined.

The problem is that it comes from soybeans which are well known for being genetically modified. I try to avoid anything that contains GMO ingredients, and that includes chocolate chips.

At first, I started purchasing chocolate chips that didn’t include soy lecithin or other ingredients I wanted to avoid, but they are pretty expensive. They typically run about double the price of your average bag of chocolate chips.

So I decided to make my own of course. Through some trial and error, I found that homemade chocolate chips are quite easy to make and they can be made at a fraction of the price.

I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as I do!

Are Homemade Chocolate Chips Good For Baking?

Since we tend to stay away from a lot of processed foods, we end up doing a lot of baking and making our own homemade treats. So of course the first thing that we had to try after making these homemade chocolate chips was a batch of our chocolate chip cookies.

The chocolate chips did tend to melt a bit more than your average chocolate chip. However, after the cookies cooled, so did the chocolate chips.

How To Store Homemade Chocolate Chips?

I store mine in the freezer. Although they tend to keep their shape fairly well, they do seem to be a little more sensitive to melting when being handled.

Tips

  • Place the silicone mold on a baking sheet to easily transfer it to the freezer.
  • Try making rustic chocolate chips by freezing the melted chocolate in a small parchment paper lined glass container. After it freezes, remove the chocolate by pulling out the parchment paper. Use a knife to chop into small pieces for baking or snacks.
  • To create a double boiler, heat an inch or two of water in a small sauce pan and place a glass bowl on top of the pan. Your bowl should be big enough so that it does not fall into the pan, but instead it should rest on top of it. The steam from the water will warm the bottom of the bowl and melt the cocoa butter.
  • Depending on the size of your silicone mold, you may have a little leftover melted chocolate after filling your mold. Don’t let that go to waste. Take out a few of your favorite nuts, coat them in the melted chocolate, and place them on a parchment lined tray and place in the freezer to harden. These make a great sweet treat!
